Comradery Brings Us Together in the Healthcare Field

If there’s one word that has been the healthcare field’s saving grace, it is the camaraderie. For those around us, those we work with, and those we fight for every day. For those whom we lost in 2020, it makes our fight more measurable. Camaraderie is the epoxy that holds us together.

A Rough Start

2020 seemed like any other year, the start of a new decade, but as everyone knows now, 2020 and the coronavirus would wreak havoc on our personal and professional lives. What started innocently enough with travel bans and the notion that it won’t happen here quickly escalated out of control. Month after month, positive cases and deaths rose before giving way to a full-blown pandemic. About 6% of adults hospitalized with COVID-19, from March through May, were healthcare workers. A whopping third of them were nurses or nursing assistants. Around 28% admitted to an intensive care unit, and 16% had to use a ventilator. 4% eventually died. Even still, front line healthcare workers continued to be optimistic and give it there all day after day.

Virtual Visits Increase

Telehealth, for the first time, had an unprecedented boom in the healthcare industry. Before the pandemic hit, there were three barriers that limited access to telehealth. Cost, availability, and also, relationships were a contributing factor. When a patient saw a provider, they were more likely to use the service. Those barriers came to a halt dramatically when the President declared a state of emergency. The administration strongly encouraged doctors and patients to use telehealth visits to help keep the virus at bay. Trump’s administration voicing the benefits of virtual care helped curb the spread of the virus. Telehealth visits went up by more than 50%, culminating in video requests of more than 15,000 per day in March.

Hope for the Future

As the FDA began authorizing the use of the Corona Virus vaccine, front line workers, the elderly, and the most vulnerable populations will see its effect first. Although myths exist about the virus, it’s essential to get accurate up to date information. None of the current COVID-19 vaccines contain the live virus that causes COVID-19. There are many different types of vaccines in development. Each vaccine aims to relay our immune systems on recognizing and fighting the virus that causes COVID-19. This process can cause side effects, such as a fever; however, it’s essential to know that this is normal and a sign that the body is developing immunity. Through it all, we can realize that people are the number one resource, and we’re the epoxy that holds it all together.
